Birthday Wish

by Gavan on March 25, 2010

Hey guys,

So today I’ve reached a milestone. It’s the 10th anniversary of my 30th birthday.
Ba dum bum

Seriously though this is a great day for me and I’m excited about hittin’ the big 4-0!

In lieu of presents this year what I’d really like today from all of you is a favour. If you don’t know already, there’s a new food movement starting up here Stateside by British chef Jamie Oliver, which is aimed to help curb the kids’ obesity epidemic that has taken over. For those of you that know Jamie you know he tackled this problem back in England and now has decided to give it a go here. He has a new show on the box which starts tomorrow night on ABC called Food Revolution. It’s not about fast food or drinking too many sodas, it’s about pushing for better food in schools as well as teaching kids about where food actually comes from. If you’ve followed me here on my site you’ll know that I showcase cooking real proper food and not food that comes from a box. I’ve always tried to show that cooking healthy food is easy, tasty and really all you need is a little organization and interest to make this magic happen in the kitchen. In this magic is where my passion lies.

Jamie won the TED Prize recently and talks about childhood obesity and the detrimental effect it’s having on not only the kids but their families, too. I’m a big supporter of his cause so what I’d love from you guys today, in honor of my parents bestowing me upon you 4 decades ago, is a bit of your help to make Jamie’s wish come true any way you can. Start by signing the petition just to show your interest to get some momentum going on this issue, by watching the show on Friday and most importantly, by helping to spread the word. Want to know more? Watch Jamie and producer Ryan Seacrest on Larry King tonight. Need I say more? You all know how important this is for our kids, for our food, for our future.

So what do you say?

Sign the petition today and tune in tomorrow night to support the Food Revolution.

Don’t forget to let me know!

Cheers all!

Great post Gavin. Yesterday I taught 6 groups of elementary school kids cooking lessons. All the vegetables came straight from the garden. I also adopted a school yesterday as part of the ‘Network For a Healthy California’ program. They are matching local elementary schools with local chefs to provide healthy eating resources, cooking classes, career nights etc. I am sure there is something similar in LA you should get involved. Happy Birthday, Diane.

just signed up for this, totally worthwhile but he has a battle on his hands, did you see the show when he was doing this on the UK ? The parents were lining up outside the gates to sneak junk food into the kids, kids cant eat healthily if the parents arent signed up for this too, scope should definitely be widened for this one..

Thanks for the good wishes Janet, appreciate it.

Diane – I love this idea and have already looked into it. Good on you for getting involved. Thanks for the kind wishes also.

Sue – I haven’t seen that piece with the parents in it. If you haven’t got the parents on board you’re buggered fro the start.

Leona – Thanks for signing.

Siobhan – well done girl. Whatcha think of it?
