These little beauties are just in season now lasting all the way through the summer. I had a bag of them in my fridge from my CSA box wondering what the heck was I going to do with them. Yesterday my neighbors were grilling up a feast for Memorial Day so I figured why not throw these on the grill? To my delight they turned out great and were really easy to do. Simple is best!
1 lb Fava beans in their pods
2 tbsp olive oil
2 tsp Chile con Limon (chilli lemon salt)*
*NOTE: If you don’t have this sort of seasoning available ( I got it in a Mexican store) just add the following:
1/4 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp chilli powder
1/2 lemon – zested
In a large bowl toss the beans with the seasonings and oil, coating completely. Place the beans in a single layer on your grill (outdoor or stove top) on a medium heat. You don’t want to put them on a high heat or the pods will char too much before the beans have had a chance to steam.
Flip pods over after 4 minutes to continue cooking. Total grilling time was about 7-8 minutes. If the pods start to burn move them off the direct flame or turn the heat down.
Once cooked place back in the mixing bowl you tossed them in and toss again with squeeze lime juice.
Serve in the pods.
NOTE: The idea here is to eat the beans from the pod and lick the seasoning from the outside of the pod or from your fingers to get that delicious flavour as well.
