Just when I thought my first day of wine tasting in the Napa Valley couldn’t get any better, our next destination found us in the heart of Yountville at Kapcsandy Wines. Our wonderful hosts, Lou and Bobbie Kapcsandy were gracious enough to share their delicious wines and brilliant stories fit for an Irishman. Something about being a family sheep herder comes to mind but I’ll leave that on the editing room floor and instead I’ll tell you a little bit more about this great winery.
The Kapcsandy family–Lou, Roberta and son Louis Jr.–purchased their property from Beringer Estates in May of 2000, after phylloxera destroyed the vines in 1999.
“In 2001, we teamed up with legendary winemaker Helen Turley and her viticulturist husband John Wetlaufer. We conducted comprehensive investigations of soils profile, physical properties, soils chemistry, geological formation and drainage. To our amazement and pleasure, we discovered a unique vineyard with multiple micro-geological conditions. We have great respect, admiration and love for this very special land in Yountville, CA, and decided to redevelop the vineyard for its utmost potential and produce world-class red wines under our family label.”
Remember when I mentioned passion in the episode? I get fired up listening to people talk about what they’re passionate about–quite refreshing isn’t it?
Above is the sorting table where they remove all but the best berries because only pure berries go into their wines. Who was a lucky boy?
Rounding out the visit was a tour of the winery. I still can’t get over how pristine it was.
We tasted several wines that day including a 2008 Roberta’s Reserve Merlot and a 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon
Grand Vin, which (not that I knew it at the time) received 100 points. That means I was drinking the best of the best. How am I going to top this next time I hit up Napa?
